Thom Yorke, leader of Radiohead and a foremost musician of our time, joins the Sónar anniversary with a concert on Saturday 16 at Sónar by Night, where he will revisit his career in a live mix with producer Nigel Godrich and multidisciplinary artist Tarik Barri, who will provide the stunning visual design of the show.
Sónar 2018 will premiere new live shows from five of today’s most important artists in Spain: Rosalía, will bring a new live format that will confirm her as a star beyond flamenco; Niño de Elche, presenting a live show with the most unconventional dancer imaginable, Israel Galván; Refree, with a solo exploration of his electronic music curiosities in an audiovisual show together with director Isaki Lacuesta; Henry Saiz, will perform “Human” live accompanied by his band; and Oscar Mulero will showcase his live project “Monochrome”, giving us a window into his more introspective and experimental side.
Two stand out DJ’s of Sónar by Night will present very particular sets at Sónar by Day. On Thursday 14 Laurent Garnier will retrace his career with a session entitled Laurent plays Garnier in which he will only play music from his own repertoire; Diplo comes to Sónar by Day on Friday 15 with the unique format, Diplo presents, a showcase in which he will bring together his favourite emerging African artists – Distruction Boyz (South Africa), Mr Eazi (Nigeria) and Kampire (Uganda)- and will close the showcase with an extra special DJ set.
The most up-to-date urban music assumes special importance this year with performances from GoldLink, Yung Lean, Oddisee & Good Compny, Dre Skull, King Doudou, KOKOKO! , Preditah, Joe Kay from the Soulection label, and Little Simz, reinvigorating styles and sounds, including sad rap, dancehall, activist hip hop, new funk, British grime and African influenced trap. Sónar continues its commitment to underground, extreme and unclassifiable sounds on the SonarXS stage, to which it adds inspiring artists such as Chino Amobi (noise and global hardcore), Rosa Pistola (reggaeton and new Latin rhythms),Nathy Peluso (trap and contemporary soul), Russell Haswell featuring Sue Tompkins (experimentation and noise), Rozzma (Arabic beats), Putochinomaricón (new lo-fi trap) and MOW (dream-pop).
Sónar by Night also strengthens its program with performances and heavyweight sets from the likes of Modeselektor dj set, A-Trak and Benjamin Damage, the up and coming Charlotte de Witte, and Bonobo with a special dj set for dancing into the early hours. Sónar by Day presents concerts by artists representing the best in experimental and avant-garde music, with legendary figures like Cornelius and Alva Noto (both presenting new albums), Laurel Halo, Agoria (with his first live show) and three high-octane duos: Sinjin Hawke & Zora Jones, Ilpo Väisänen & Schneider TM (under the moniker, Die Angel) and Americans Second Woman.
