• UTA PodCast #007: D33P

We´ve listened to some tracks and  we were so impressed that we needed to ask D33P aka Alex Bass a few questions and are proud to bring you this written interview of this awesome producer from Israel. You should definitely follow this man!

For those who may be new to your music, how would you describe your sound? Q
Well, I usually go through so many genres in one year, so it´s quite hard for me to describe my overall sound as it changes from time to time. However, I´d like to believe it sounds yummy 🙂 A
What do you personally think about the evolution of dance music right now? Q

For me it seems that these days no one really cares about the quality of music, especially talking about dance music…All of the latest rising producers are sick for the big drop that makes the crowd go nuts. Funny is that in the end no one will really remember this DJ as a Character, because his music works as a fast food: you´re satisfied for that moment, but later you´re feeling empty. One more thing: it ‘tastes’ always the same; because he plays exactly the same playlist like the one did before. When I started to go out back in the days and getting to know the club scene, it was a magical time for me just because most of the DJs used to play real house music, music that even after 10 years still causes emotions. If you think about today´s dance music, none of the latest productions will ever become a musical classic. None of them will be played in 10 years – it´s sad, but true!

Let’s talk a bit about production – how do you approach a new track in the studio? Q

It depends on my mood. Sometimes a good idea can come suddenly, unexpected. However, I can also sit in the studio for months and create shitty beats. I guess, I´m doing around 50 skits each month 🙂 Most of them you wouldn´t even play in the toilet, but one of them can sound dope! Usually, when I recognize this dope beat or melody, it takes me around 2-3 days to finish the track, but sometimes even more, although the more I sit on the track, the more it becomes unnatural, so that´s why I love to finish them really quick.

What are your favorite toys in the studio at the moment? Q
I don’t have so many of them. Honestly, I don’t really believe in spending way too much money in creating music. These days you´ve got so many vst’s that are even better than this analog stuff… But yes, the process turning knobs on the analog devices is bloody fun!!! A
What’s next for D33P in 2014? Q
Lately I have started my very own imprint called D33P MusicTo be honest, I felt I needed a platform to release my own stuff, a platform for releases that all the fancy big labels don’t really want J It´s hard to sign music these days, because this industry is all about the ‘clicks’ and who you already know. I´m one of the DJs who love playing on the decks, but not to hang out. I prefer to save this energy for the studio, qualitive music and ideas! My label gives me the freedom I need to create and produce whatever I want, and it´s damn cool! Talking about productions, I´ve made a really cool remix for “System Recordings”. Plus, a few of my older productions are finally being released (some of them I´ve finished 1-2 years ago). One of the tracks is collaboration with a good friend of mine – “Vanilla Ace”, whom many of the readers probably know. Also a few more collaborations + remixes that I can´t really speak about, but trust me, they will be BIG! And our last question that we always close an interview with – if there’s one artist out there that you could work with, who would you choose? Q
Without doubt, Maceo Plex! I fucking adore this man… In my opinion, he is one of the brightest forward thinking producers I have ever heard. For me this guy is a fucking god! A
